History helps us to recognise the distinctive forces which have shaped our society and determined our place within it while also making us aware of common links which we share with all humanity. History at Level 2 focuses on an understanding of early 19th Century New Zealand and the War in the Pacific. We will also analyse whether it was justifiable for America to drop two atomic bombs on Japan to end WWII. Skills of analysis, synthesis, research and communication which are portable and fundamental to lifelong learning are further developed at this level.
Themes studied include:
• 19th Century New Zealand and the Northern War
• World War II in the Pacific: Pearl Harbor and the dropping of the atomic bombs
• Student’s own choice of event for the research internal
• Interpretation of historians’ perspectives in history
