L2 Media Studies
Media studies is the study of creation, analysis, and enjoyment of media and its different products. It also explores how our views are shaped by the different kinds of media we consume in our everyday lives. In level 2 media we will explore ethical issues in the media, design and produce a short film and explore the idea of genre through a number of different films. Students who enjoy learning about the world around them and how they can engage more critically with the media content they consume will like this subject. This course includes 4 UE Literacy credits and students will also be eligible for a subject endorsement.
Course Overview
Term 1
- Intro to Media: Understand basic media concepts and the historical significance of media in society.
- Investigate an ethical issue: Students will investigate an ethical issue (e.g. identity, femininity, masculinity, body image, gambling etc.) prevalent in modern media and research its impacts on society.
Term 2
- Design a media product according to a brief: Students will be tasked with designing a short film according to a brief provided to them. They will be required to complete a number of stages of pre-production, including but not limited to: concept mapping, script-writing, storyboarding, character design, costume design, set design etc.
- Complete a media product: Students will make their ideas come to life by creating their short film. In groups (or individually) students will use their aspects of pre-production as a starting point to shoot and edit a completed product.
Term 3
- Genre study: Students will study the horror genre and analyse how it has changed over time in response to shifts in societies' values. They will be required to analyse three films from the genre. The knowledge acquired throughout this term to complete their end of year exam.

Higher Education in Media & Communications:
Pursue a degree in media studies, communications, journalism, or related fields at a university or college.
Journalism & Broadcasting:
Careers in journalism, broadcasting, radio, or television production.
Advertising & Public Relations:
Roles in advertising, marketing, or public relations.
Film & Television Production:
Opportunities in film production, directing, screenwriting, editing, or cinematography.
Digital Media & Content Creation:
Careers in social media management, digital marketing, content creation, or web design.
Credit Information
You will be assessed in this course through all or a selection of the standards listed below.
